Operator = Performs hands-on assembly/fabrication work at thier organization.
Inspector = Examines completed fabrication for defects against acceptance criteria at thier organization; verifies that operator work meets standards.
Instructor (Level B) = Trains operators and inspectors in NASA workmanship standards (NASA‑STD‑8739.1, 8739.2, 8739.3, 8739.4, 8739.5) at thier organization; may train internal personnel or subcontractors; must complete instructor‑level training from a NASA Level A Instructor and recertify every 24 months.
Key distinction = Level B Instructors have operator + inspector skills plus teaching/assessment ability. Personnel trained to instructor level meet operator/inspector training requirements prior to instructor certification.
Operator AND Inspector = Must meet grading criteria for both roles. Operators may not inspect their own work for product acceptance at thier organizations.
Full Certification or Recertification?
The certificate of completion of training is valid for two years from the last certification. Students must start a "Recertification" training class within two years of the last certification. Beyond this two year period, students must enroll in an initial "Certification" training class. Please note, the Instructor B Certification Training is an 80-hour course broken into 2- week periods of training. Upon completing the 1st week of training (40 hours) you receive an Operator/Inspector certification and will receive the Instructor B Certification after completing the 2nd 40-hour week of training.
